"The SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment) Faculty at Balaklava High School were delighted to have Nick speak to the year 10 students over some 4 or 5 years. As part of the year 10 curriculum, students studied World War 1 and a study of Gallipoli was naturally a large part of that study. Each year Nick spoke to 2 or 3 classes about the Australian experience there. His illustrated talk would engross these 15 -16-year-olds for a double lesson of some 90 minutes. This is no mean feat. Nick succeeded by being a well-informed gifted speaker. Nick has a knowledge and passion for this topic unequalled by anyone I have met. His enthusiasm enabled him to bring this subject alive in a way teachers and text-books are unable to do so. His ongoing visits to Gallipoli have equipped him with memorable, updated photos and the opportunity to observe the evolution of this site. His approach not only includes the history of the battle there (complete with slides from historical photos of the time) but also human stories of soldiers involved. Nick has the ability to draw others in to share his fascination with this landmark event in Australia’s history and I defy anyone not to become as enthralled as he is with this story".

NICK SMYTH Presentation Images of WESTERN FRONT – An Australian Perspective. The talk began with a PLAN showing relevant areas of fighting and various battle Fronts. These areas of battles were compared with photos of how the countryside appears today so that the audience could get a feel for the flat undulating topography- the only cover being in holes blasted by exploding bombs.
Each battle in France and Belgium was supplemented by statistics relating to numbers of soldiers killed and wounded further highlighting the horrors of WW1.
Several photos of War Memorials were impressive and paid for by Governments of the day.
Specific points of interest were revealed by photos of tanks which had to turn sideways on to fire missiles at the enemy.
The talk concluded after EXACTLY 50 minutes in time for questions which were answered with clarity.
Overall, Nick’s presentation was clear, succinct and fluid, drawing the audience in and indicating the high quality of his research.

Nick Smyth in recent years gave 2 outstanding presentations for the Owen Community.
The first being his WW1 images and commentary. Nick coordinated with Viterra to do an outdoor showing with images displayed on the silo wall at Owen. His preparation and negotiations with Viterra allowed over 300 people to view and hear the presentation. The content was amazing.
Nick’s second presentation to the Owen Community was inside the Owen Hall and was based on The Kokoda Trail. Again, this was a most informative and enlightening presentation. Nick again set everything up and spoke with such clarity that all could understand.
The collection of images that Nick has access to and his knowledge of Australian involvement in war is outstanding.
The Owen Community is keen for Nick to return and do another presentation.
I highly recommend Nick for his presentations.
